On Friday, June 21, 2024, Hawai’i Governor Josh Green signed the Shaka Gesture Law, making the Shaka, the first-ever state gesture in America. The law was passed in rare unanimous votes in both the State Senate and the House. It was also part of the 7% of bills that get passed each year. And it passed in itʻs first session, while most bills take multiple years to pass.
Trading Pins
At the signing, ID8 Chairperson Steve Sue traded Shaka / Gov pins in the signing, sharing an optimistic look to the future with the Governor. Later that day several people, including Master General Kenneth Hara, observed Governor continuing to wear his Shaka pin.
Road Map to Aloha
As noted to Governor by Sue, perhaps the Shaka can deliver a new message of hope in this time of great political turmoil. Lowering the political temperature is a bi-partisan agreement now, and Governor Green is wearing the road map. Hopefully he stays the course.
